Do different pick materials make a difference?
To beginner or intermediate guitarists, a pick is a pick — it’s just a little piece of plastic that makes it easier to pluck the strings and get a purer sound out of your guitar. However, the construction of your pick can play a bigger role than you might think.
Different picks make a huge difference to the tone and playability. The material used for the pick, the thickness, the shape and the texture all plays an important role in how your music sounds. In the first half of the 1900s, the most popular material for guitar picks was tortoiseshell from the Atlantic Hawksbill Turtle — a tough material for sure, but the idea was vetoed when the Atlantic Hawksbill Turtle became endangered in 1973.
Now, most guitar picks are made from nylon, celluloid or Delrin. Here’s a quick guide to the different materials available.
- Nylon — this is the most common material for guitar picks. These flexible picks produce a warm or mellow tone compared to stiff picks. Some guitarists use nylon guitar picks to produce a vintage tone, so you might see rock and blues musicians using nylon.
- Celluloid — this material was the original alternative to tortoiseshell and the main goal was to produce a similar feel and tone. Celluloid is a lot stiffer than nylon and produces a sharper tone. Quite often, you’ll find that celluloid picks have a pearl-like texture to match the look of a natural tortoiseshell.
- Delrin — this is a type of plastic that’s often used in picks from Dunlop and Everlast. These picks are quite stiff and produce a high end in the tone. They feel powdery in your fingers and give you a better grip as well as friction against the strings.
- Stone — stone picks feel surprisingly good in your hands! Oftentimes, stone picks are made from Agate, Jade and Jasper, and they’re incredibly stiff so you get a pure, sharp sound out of the strings.
Does the thickness make a difference?
Much like the materials, the thickness of your pick can make a difference to your performance, too. Even the tiniest change in thickness can produce notable changes in the tone of your strings — the thicker the pick, the stiffer it becomes, so your tone will become sharper and higher in tone.

- Picks less than 0.6mm are considered thin. These picks are flexible and produce a much later tone with less bass. Thin picks (normally nylon) are often used in acoustic recordings and performances to create a softer sound — they’re also great for strumming.
- Picks between 0.6mm and 0.8mm are considered “medium” and start to feel a little stiffer, impacting the way you play the strings. You tend to get more bass, volume and midrange tones with a medium pick.
- Picks over 0.8mm are considered thick and they add a lot of bass and midrange tones. If you strum with a thicker pick, you’ll get a loud, booming sound from the strings. They’re popular among lead guitarists and heavier music styles.

FAQs about picks
- Does the texture of a pick matter?
Yes! The texture of your pick can determine whether or not you can hold onto your pick during a performance — let’s face it, we’ve all dropped a pick in our time. Polished picks, for example, have a smooth and polished shine to them (celluloid picks are usually polished). These picks are fine to grip until you start to sweat. Sanded picks, on the other hand (like the ones from Dunlop), have a sanded, more powdery feel. These picks are much easier to grip while playing. Likewise, raised picks are easier to play with because they have raised bumps for grip.
- Is it better to learn guitar with a pick?
Really, it depends on what you want to learn. If you want to learn classical songs and music that is normally played with your fingers, then you won’t need a pick. However, if you’re learning more complicated riffs or strumming, a pick is recommended to give you more control over the sound.
- Can guitar picks get worn out?
Yes but it depends on how often you’re using your picks as well as the material, thickness and playing style. Some picks can wear out within weeks while others will last for years without showing any obvious wear and tear. Metal guitarists, for example, will notice their guitar picks wear out quickly because they’re playing aggressively.
- When should I buy new picks?
When your pick starts to feel different, it’s probably time to invest in some new picks. You will notice that the sides start to wear down after a while and this can have a big impact on the way you perform.
- Which picks are best for beginners?
We recommend opting for sanded picks or raised picks because these textures are easier to handle. We also recommend picking up a mixed pack of picks so you can play with different kinds of picks and find out which one is right for you.
