What is a metronome?

A metronome is a device that clicks at regular intervals to help musicians maintain a consistent tempo. You can set how fast or slow you’d like the metronome to click based on beats per second. Musicians have been using metronomes for centuries to learn new songs and hold a particular tempo. 

Most mechanical metronomes have a pendulum that swings back and forth to the clicks, but now there are digital metronomes on the market as well as metronome apps on your smartphone. 

Metronome settings include: 

• Quarter notes — most musicians tend to set their metronome so that one click equals one-quarter note (4/4 is the most common time signature). Each metronome click equals one quarter-note and four clicks equal a full measure.
  

• Eighth notes — some musicians make their metronome represent eighth notes (this is common when eighth notes are part of the time signature e.g. 6/8 time or 9/8 time).

• Dotted quarter notes — some time signatures can be subdivided into dotted quarter notes like 3/8, 6/8 and 12/8. For example, in 6/8 time, some musicians will opt for six clicks where each click equals an eighth note or two clicks equals a dotted quarter note. 

How to use a metronome

If you’ve never used a metronome before, it might seem like a mysterious little device and it might not be immediately obvious how to set it up and start using it. However, metronomes are actually super easy to use. 

Here are a few tips on how to purchase and use a metronome:

• Choose the right metronome for you. There are classic mechanical devices, handheld electronic metronomes, metronome watches and metronome apps available. The app might be a good choice for beginners who are just starting to learn the ropes.
  

• Select the unit of measure e.g. quarter notes. This will tell you what each click of the metronome represents. We recommend starting with a measurement that allows you to play all the right notes to the rhythm.

• Mark your beats in printed music. If you’re using sheet music, we recommend marking the beats. It's important to understand the rhythm you’re playing as well as the right placement in terms of the beat. If you don’t mark the beats, you might end up playing long or short notes without a pulse to the music.

• Once you’re confident with the song you’re practising, increase the speed. It’s good to start slow when you’re practising to ensure you can hit the notes and the length of the notes in time to the beat. As you gain more confidence, increase the speed by one notch until you’ve reached the right tempo. This might be a long-term project, so don’t stress if it’s not coming together as fast as you want it to!

• Don’t play the easy parts fast and the hard parts slow. You should play everything at the same tempo so that when you reach your goal tempo, all the rhythms are strong and correct.
