Gig bag vs hard case — what’s the best option?
There are pros and cons to both gig bags and hard cases but overall, it all comes down to how often you use your instruments and how often you’ll be travelling with them. There are a few different elements you’ll need to consider when choosing between a gig bag and a hard case.
- Price. Hard cases are pricier than gig bags due to the complex construction and extra protection. Gig bags are much cheaper so we recommend this option for beginners or those who don’t use their instrument a lot and/or don’t travel with their instrument.
- Potential for damage. You’ll need to consider whether your instrument will get banged up, jarred or damaged when you’re travelling. For example, if you’re transporting your instrument in the back of a van or truck, you might want to choose a hard case to prevent any unnecessary damage. If your instrument is in storage at home, a regular gig bag would do the trick.
- Space. Hard cases can take up a lot of room, especially if you have multiple instruments in heavy, hard cases. Gig bags are slim and lightweight, giving you more space for instruments in storage/at home.
- Additional storage. Both hard cases and gig bags have extra storage — for example, most gig bags have zip-up storage pockets for picks, capos, leads and cables, and so on. Hard cases generally have some storage for these items but it can be limited.
- Rare/specialty instrument. If you’ve got a special instrument in your collection, we definitely recommend a durable hard case. This will keep your rare or specialty instrument safe no matter what.
- International travel. If you’re planning to fly with your guitar or instrument, it’s not a bad idea to invest in a hard case. Your instrument will likely be stored under the plane, so you’ll want to protect it from movement during the flight and potentially rough handling by the flight crew.

What to look for in a gig bag
If you’re considering a soft gig bag, we recommend looking for something with plenty of padding for extra protection. Generally speaking, gig bags are made of lightweight materials like canvas and nylon, so you need that extra layer to keep your instrument safe in storage or on the road.Â
Your guitar or instrument should be snug in the case — too much wiggle room can increase the chances of a damaged instrument.Â
As well as padding, you should also consider storage. Most soft gig bags have zippered pockets for things like picks, strings and cleaning cloths, as well as detachable shoulder straps, a soft interior, handles and a hook for hanging up the bag.
What to look for in a hard case
Hard cases offer the best protection against bumps, drops, rapid changes in temperature and humidity. Temperature control is a major consideration for a guitar case — dry and humid climates are a guitar’s worst enemy (some musos even opt for a guitar humidifier to protect against cracks and other damage) — so a hard case is the best option for musos on the go.Â
Other things to look out for in a hard case include sturdy latches and hinges, a storage compartment under the neck of the guitar, a soft interior and a comfortable, reliable handle.Â
